Wildlife Wednesday! Not long ago we did a post on wildlife sightings at Jenolan, highlighting some of the species we didn't know visited or lived on the reserve until they were spotted here. One of our favourite 'newbies' is the Australasian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaeholliandiae), a tiny grebe that is often mistaken for a baby duck. Although it's a common, widespread species, we didn't have a record for it until this little grebe visited us, all decked out in its splendid breeding colours 😍.
Photographic records like these are important, helping us make the correct identification so that we can add these species to the list of animals and plants that use the reserve. Knowing what species we have is the first step towards their conservation, an important goal for Jenolan as a wildlife sanctuary 🥰

Are you a senior who is interested in learning how to write stories?
Lithgow City Council Libraries are holding a FREE six week writing workshop for seniors over 60 starting in May.
From idea to story and beyond!
We are all gatekeepers to a story, whether it be our experiences or our wild imagination! Perhaps it’s time to stop saying, ‘one day I’ll do that’ and do it. Learn how to write YOUR story.
This six-week course provides you with the fundamentals of writing a compelling story.
Week 1: Introduction to storytelling including genre, structure, process and coming up with an idea.
Week 2: Developing your setting using language techniques.
Week 3: Choosing a main character and how to make them real.
Week 4: Creating a compelling narrative to hook the reader.
Week 5: Resolving the story, or ‘how do I know where to end?’
Week 6: Bringing it together, sharing your story, and what’s next?
Each session includes a detailed introduction and examples, exercises to build your storytelling and writing muscles, and ample time for writing supported by an experienced writer and teacher.
There is no previous writing experience required, just bring along your love of writing, a will to learn and a pen and paper.
Facilitator: Tracie McMahon is a published writer and teacher, whose short stories have been shortlisted in local and national writing competitions. She is currently working on taking her historical fiction manuscript to publication, in between exercising her creative muscles with short stories and art. Her writing can be found online at www.themovingpen.com.au.
Transport can be provided but also needs to be pre-arranged.
The classes will be held on Tuesday mornings at Lithgow Library from 10am to 12pm.
The course is free but bookings are essential and can be made by calling the Lithgow Library on 63529100. (Note: our phones are currently not working so please leave a name and number on our voicemail and we will get back to you) ... See MoreSee Less
